Sandy Island Nature Preserve Kayak Tour
9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Half day guided kayak tour across the Waccamaw River to walk on Sandy Island. Meet at the upper parking lot, Wacca Wache Landing in Murrells Inlet. Call our store at (843) 546-4840 to make required advance reservation.
From the parking lot, we will take you in our van a quarter mile down to Wacca Wache Landing. After a brief safety talk and paddling instruction, we will launch our kayaks and paddle the creeks and canals of the Waccamaw River. Eventually we will land on Sandy Island, the largest undeveloped fresh water island on the East Coast and home to an indigenous population descended from plantation slaves. We will walk through part of the preserve's diverse 9000 acres of scrub oak sand ridges, Carolina Bays, and long leaf yellow pine forests that provide habitat for fox and bobcats, deer, black bears, migratory ducks, and endangered red cockaded woodpeckers. After our break ashore, we will paddle creeks that circle back to the landing where we started our journey.
