Paddling During a Kayak Tour Past One of the Outbuildings at Historic Chicora Wood Plantation on the Great Pee Dee River

Chicora Wood Plantation Kayak Tour
9:00 am to 2:00 pm

Half day guided kayak tour of 18th century Chicora Wood Plantation creeks and canals. Meet at Black River Outdoors Center in Georgetown. Call our store at (843) 546-4840 to make required advance reservation.

As you follow our van in your vehicle out to Plantersville and to Chicora Wood Plantation (about a 20 minute drive), we will stop to view the mysterious remains of the Antebellum Prince Frederick Church. Then after a brief safety talk and paddling instruction, we will launch on Chapel Creek and paddle the creeks and hand-dug canals that interlace the Great Pee Dee and Waccamaw Rivers. For your break ashore, we will stop on one of the dikes and observe the trunk gates that control flooding of the impoundments. These vast plantations originally grew indigo and Carolina Gold rice that sustained an aristocratic society beginning in the 1600's until the War Between the States. But now these quiet waters and marshes are refuge for colorful songbirds, alligators, and turtles. We will finish our tour by paddling past Chicora Wood's magnificent mansion and back up Chapel Creek to the landing.
